On our last day in Louisville I wanted to add one more notch in my belt so we crossed the bridge over the Ohio River to the State of Indiana! One moment we were in Kentucky, the next Indiana! Not knowing where to go, we pulled off at signs for Ohio State Park (yes, in Indiana) and viewed the Louisville skyline. From reading the plaques we discovered that the rock-like material that led to the river was actually ancient fossil beds from 386 million (that’s not a typo!) years ago. Those fossils beds are among the world’s oldest naturally exposed archeological beds. Right there in Indiana! Whoa, our minds were blown. The sun was setting leaving a gorgeous light for some family photos. And that was our last outing in the South.
