You may remember Mark Peterson’s gorgeous photo essay for NYTs Mag’s feature on the tuba section for Allen High School’s marching band based in Texas.

I wrote to Mark, (who we’ve used a bunch in the mag) gushing at how much I loved his work. Back in high school, I too was in marching band for all four years. Visions of high school band are some of the greatest, most fun memories of my entire life (band nerd!). I played the piccolo for marching band and then was the drum major for the last two years.

Texas is serious about their marching bands. The tuba section at Allen High School is comprised of 26 people! Whoa.

Ah, memories!

Fabulous color guard shot. Look at those cowgirls!

When Mark sent these unseen outtakes, I was ecstatic. I love the up-close and personal shots of the tuba section.

As an ode to the iPhone, Mark captured these last few pics using Hipstamatic. Wow, his shots look so much better than mine ever would.

The glaring light that shines upon the brass as the sunsets makes my heart smile.

And his work over at Redux.
