Robyn Twomey, a Bay area freelance and fine art photographer has taken a series of portraits of people smoking marijuana. The photos are taken at the exhale—capturing a waft of smoke that hovers outside the mouth, giving the subjects an almost gangtsa look. Gangsta, being what initially drew me to these photos. But inquiring a little more, the viewer realizes the reason behind these moments are much more somber. You learn of Jordan, one of Twomey’s subjects, who is 19 and smokes medical marajuana because he has a rare form of leukemia. He and Twomey’s other subjects are smoking to relieve pain. Their eyes aren’t proud. They smoke out of need, not out of want. Twomey’s photographs allow the world to almost meet patients of medical mary jane, putting a face to the pain amongst the murky law of our legal system.

Medicine is on display at Patricia Sweetow Gallery, San Francisco, CA. from March 3rd through April 2, 2011.
[Disclosure: I’ve worked with Robyn Twomey (pronounced Too-mey) at the magazine. Her work is awesome.]
