The elusive funk and soul singer, and fine artist, Mingering Mike is returning to Hemphill gallery this Saturday to show his new work (and some old). If you aren’t familiar with Mike, his work was discovered by Dori Hadar at a flea market. Dori, being a record collector found what seemed to be record albums. Upon closer inspection, he discovered that the records were actually fake. Cardboard had been cut in the shape of records with grooves in the board to mimic vinyl. Then it was placed in cardboard slip jackets complete with artwork and discography. Mingering Mike is the character behind this unusual find.
To learn more, check out the book published on Mingering Mike. You can hear recordings (sung by Mike) of songs on the albums, you can buy one of the cool t-shirts with his artwork and you should definitely go to the opening this Saturday at Hemphill.
