Do you have any idea how hard it is to find cool stuff for boys? All the sites out there — Zulily, I’m looking at you — pander to girls and pretty things. Finally something with a little edge and wit plopped into my inbox via Fab (like Zulily, you must have a subscription to view). The playful designs are by Brooklyn based shop, Gnome Enterprises; for boys and girls too. Now that’s fab.
Here’s an invite to Fab — just in case. Lot’s of awesome modern design stuff for the home.

In honor of 9/11, I thought I would post illustrator, Jesse Lenz’s latest creation for the Andrew Sullivan cover story that Newsweek is running. I am such a fan of Jesse’s style. The simple photo-illustration next to the bold, black and white typography is stunning isn’t it? (full disclosure, I’ve worked with Jesse a bunch of times at the mag.) Nice work Jesse!
Summer Solstice: Takashi Murakami graces the Google Doodle
June 21, 2011 at 6:36 pm | Posted in contemporary art, illustrator | 1 CommentTags: Kaikai, Kiki, summer solstice, summer vacation, takashi murakami

Oh happy summer, it’s the longest day of the year! My love, Takashi Murakami has graced the Google Doodle homepage with his iconic flower-faced characters, Kaikai & Kiki! I’m sorry, I know I’ve been quiet. Eventually, I will stop apologizing and get to work. It’s been so hard for me to concentrate and blog because all I want to do is be on summer vacation. I hope your summer is off to a good start. Sending warm breezes and love your way!

Takashi Murakami’s parade float
December 7, 2010 at 12:19 pm | Posted in contemporary art, design, illustrator, pop culture | 2 CommentsTags: cable television, japanese art, Kaikai, Kiki, macy's day parade, rockettes, takashi murakami

There are many times when I wish I was able to view television live. Sunday football is one, Wimbledon is another, and watching the Rockettes in my pajamas at my house perform at the Macy’s Day Parade would be fab. This news is a bit late but what a sight to see: Takashi Murakami’s famous characters Kaikai and Kiki made their debut soaring through the skies of New York. 2011 may be the year of cable for the Maciocha household.

Brett Affrunti knows the way to my heart.

I’ve had a pretty big crush on Mark Ruffalo since I saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I think he is so cute! So I have to thank Brooklyn based illustrator Brett Affrunti for sending me his latest illustration of Ruffalo. I’ve been an admirer of Brett Affrunti’s work for a while. He’s got a knack for illustrating moments in time in a loose but detailed way using ink, watercolor and acrylics.
Check out a previous post about Brett Affrunti’s work called “Modern Day Egon Shielle.”
Japanese illustrator: Kimiaki Yaegashi, aka Okimi
February 25, 2010 at 7:58 pm | Posted in design, illustrator | Leave a commentTags: 3d, artist, illustrator, japanese, japanimation, Kimiaki Yaegashi, Okimi

Kimiaki Yaegashi, aka Okimi is an illustrator/graphic designer living in the Kichijoji [the young, artsy] area of Tokyo. Getting his inspiration from pop art and comic books, he’s created a ton of brightly colored illustrations with groovy backgrounds. The illustrations are mostly based on cutesy themes usually of a girl in a bikini, or tiny cartoon piglets just having a good time, or both. A lot of the work is outlined in two-tones which gives it a surprising 3D feel. Take a peak at more of Okimi’s work here.
