Don’t Let Me Down: Which Beatle do you crush on?

Just last night Daryle and I were watching old clips of the Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show from 1964. I mentioned that I always thought Paul was so cute — just look at the face! And George, well he was the coolest in my book. Who is your favorite?

Happy Halloween!

Here’s wishing you a fun Halloween! Daryle and I are having a small gathering of friends over tonight. I’m cooking up a scary storm of hors d’oeuvres like Lady’s Fingers & Men’s Toes and a Rest in Peas dip from Martha Stewart. That little pumpkin above is the only one that grew from the four pumpkin plants I planted. The sacred pumpkin! Isn’t he sweeet?

Here’s the invite that I created for our gathering tonight. There’s an awesome font suite from House Industries called Monster Fonts which I used to make the invite. I was trying to make the infamous Janet Leigh scream look extra retro, with a faux-silkscreen effect and then added the classic scary-movie font next to it.
Now, back to my Devilish Eggs. Have fun today!
Linus Bike

In honor of my dearest friend Dylan’s birthday today, I thought I would post about one of the coolest bikes I’ve seen. The Linus Bike, inspired by French bicycle design from the 50′s and 60′s strives to promote a comfortable and dreamy lifestyle. One where you go to the café for lunch, have a couple glasses of wine and then see a matinée; then of course ride home on your Linus bike. I could imagine Dylan on a bike like this, riding from art gallery to pub. Dylan, see you tonight!
Remember Timex – Indiglo?

Feeling this.
Remember those old Timex commercials where a group of people would be camping and no one could see anything because the sun had set. Then one of the dudes would turn on his Indiglo and all would be well. That was awesome.

I love Martha Stewart.

A brief intro why.
This Thanksgiving my parents and Daryle’s parents will meet for the first time after nearly five years of us being together. We are both very excited and have been rushing to ready our house: finish the kitchen, finish the master bathroom (so that we will have two W.C.s), finish the electrical fiber-optic lines that are still sticking out of the wall (still, after two years living with it), refinish the front door, nail down the toe kick throughout the house, landscape the front yard, install a banister on both staircases…(Why am I even writing this? I have so much to do!)…and many other things.
That said, in preparation for the Thanksgiving event, I bought Gourmet‘s (R.I.P) and Living‘s Thanksgiving issues. For the first time, I read Martha Stewart’s entire calendar that is at the front of her magazine for November. Now that I am old enough and (semi) responsible enough; it makes a lot of sense. I have a house, a yard, pets, the need to exercise more, the interest in entertaining, etc. I am greatly inspired by her calendar because I want to be more organized while most of the time, I don’t know where to begin. I will use her calendar as a guide for my life. I like how she has her exercise scheduled far in advance. She-will-be-there. I love how she has her winterized garden planned (not to forget winterizing the bee hives!). These organizational tips will help me maintain a level of sanity. What a concept: Finalize menu by this date. Buy the rest of supplies for menu by this date. Wala!
So Martha, here’s to you…and a new me!
Gourmet magazine closes
October 6, 2009 at 9:55 am | Posted in classic, design, food, magazine industry, typography | 2 CommentsTags: esquire, gourmet, magazine industry, print, publishing, sunset magazine, vanity fair

Gourmet magazine, known for it’s exquisite recipe ideas, alongside impeccable photography, and tasteful typography is closing after being published for nearly 70 years. I ask you this: Is nothing sacred? Answer: No, nothing is. The publishing industry being in shams has left me wondering: What am I going to do? Where will I go if something similar happens to the magazine I work for?
I can say this: I didn’t do enough. I let my Gourmet subscription fall after receiving the magazine for years.
I propose everyone re-up a subscription to their favorite magazine. What magazine would you choose? At my house, we already receive Dwell, Esquire, and Sunset. I will re-subscribe to Vanity Fair today. If that magazine closes, it really will be the end of the world.
Tennis Fashion Classics

NYT’s blog posted a compilation of tennis’s fashion history dos and don’ts. I’m loving the forever hipster / pre-Richie Tenenbaum-style of Bjorn Borg. Roger Federer always has such classic style. As for the ladies, I had never heard of ballerina-esque, Gertrude Moran (or “Gorgeous Gussy”) before. What a cutie.
